As the workplace continues to shift and evolve, so does the way we work, and the way we approach technology. Video integration has been a key development in the workplace within the last 10 years>; as our ability to access high quality video equipment for less increases, and more importantly, as our everyday business and home tech has evolved to support video chatting, the idea of video conferencing has become a reality. In fact, for many, it’s a mainstay of their global business.

In terms of the average business, it isn’t difficult to see why this trend is happening – the ability to cut down on travel budgets and time spent travelling, particularly on difficult overseas trips, and still converse with colleagues and clients in a visual capacity is priceless. But how does video integration equipment fit in with a more mobile workforce?

Realistically, one of the reasons that the modern workforce has been able to become more mobile is because of the advent of video conferencing in business, particularly with everyday technology like smart phones and tablets. Whereas we might immediately think of video conferencing as being a formal situation, replacing business meetings that we usually would have travelled for in the past, many organisations report the use of more informal video platforms as having a positive effect, too – for example, an Australian Health and Fitness company stated in the The Modern Workplace 2018: People, Places & Technology Report that their use of Google Hangouts has reduced their travel budget, and perhaps other businesses have found that similar platforms have decreased the need for employees to be present in the office daily.

Of course, the technology available to us now means that however we’re using video, the conversation has been made easy.

  • The quality has improved significantly, high definition with great sound; where you feel like you are in the room with other people.
  • A lot of clients have had budget cuts, plus they are global and face travel bans or restrictions, therefore it is important that your video conference is of a top standard.

While overall the future looks bright for video conferencing supporting a more mobile workforce, there are still doubts, particularly from more traditional workplaces. As a US retail business leader told the Condeco Workplace Report:

“[Video] reduces our ability to build personal relationships. So, we require some office attendance from remote workers, for example spending one week in six in the office.”~ The Modern Workplace 2018: People, Places & Technology Report

Perhaps the most important takeaway is this – every business should find what works for them, when it comes to video conferencing, mobile working and everything in between.
